Interesting observations about Australia/Australians

I thought I'd write some funny things that I've observed so far about Australia that are different from Canada just for fun. I keep trying to remember to write them down because it's hard to remember them all on the spot, but I'll do my best here:

*So obviously people drive on the other side of the road and other side of the car here. That one is something most people know.

*The plugs are very different too. My converter from Canada died on me within the first week, so I had to go buy one from Kmart over here. Their plugs are three pronged, which isn't too strange. It's the fact that on the outlet thing itself, you have to flip a switch to see a red dot before you can get any power out of it. Whenever you aren't using the plug, or what's plugged into the plug, you switch it off to save power. I'm guessing this either means that electricity is expensive here, or Australians are trying to save the environment.

*Candies here are called lollies (I'm still working on that one). Flip flops are called thongs (also working on that one).

*When you ask for fish and chips here, you will usually get gummy shark instead of actual fish. It tastes a little different, but is still really good.

*When you say thank you to an Australian, they won't say you're welcome. They will always say "no worries" or "that's alright."

*When you buy anything anywhere, the price you see is the price you pay. There is no tax added after the fact. It's already included in the price I guess?

*Australians seem to basically have their own language. A lot of them make up words, so it can be tough to know what they're saying sometimes (on top of the accent).

*They usually can't tell the difference between an American and a Canadian (everyone seems to think I am American).

*Everything at the grocery store is measured in kilograms, and on health labels it's KJ instead of calories. I've definitely gained weight over the past week and a half because I have no idea how to read labels here (probably for the best).

*The big sports over here are AFL and Rugby.

*The banks and most shops close around 4 or 5pm. There are very few places that are open past five. Their hours are generally funny. They will give an opening hour and their closing hour is "till late." There is no set time that they close. They just close when business dies down.

*The phrase "I reckon" is used quite often.

*There are roundabouts EVERYWHERE.

*The normal greeting anywhere in Australia is "How are you going?" instead of How's it going or How are you doing?

*A lot of Australians pronounce the letter h "haytch"

*The washroom here is called the toilet. Literally when you go to the bathroom it will say "toilet" on the door and have the guy or girl symbol.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. I'll add more if I remember anything else!

  1. I like how the price you see is the price you pay. I would assume that the tax is included in the price. I think Canada should adopt that.
